• If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.

Synopsis:

James first reached out to me in 2022. He’d just spent the last 15 years pursuing and achieving his dream of acting and modeling in Hollywood while bartending in between to cover his expenses. Although it was bitter sweet, he was ready to try something different and was in the process of moving to Arizona to pursue a change in his career.

Goals:

  • To obtain a role that would allow him to earn at least six figures annually.
  • To have the ability to save and invest his money to build wealth.
  • To purchase his first home in Arizona.

Overcoming Hurdles & Providing Solutions

After listening to James, we identified five areas that would be critical in helping him successfully transition careers and achieve his goals.

  • 1. Identifying Interests & Transferable Skills:

James was confident, competitive, and enjoyed connecting with people, so sales was a natural fit. Given his financial goals and past experience as a bartender, pursuing a career in sales seemed fitting.

  • 2. Improving His Resume

Although James did have some experience working in sales and working with people, he wasn’t sure how to present his experience in a way that would make him attractive to hiring managers. So we focused on how and where a common sales thread existed in most of his previous career choices and how that experience might be attractive to various hiring managers.

  • 3. Interviewing Tips & Tricks:

James presented himself well: confident, hard working, competent, and attractive. So the focus of our time together really became explaining and breaking down what hiring managers were looking for and how he could highlight his experiences in a way that would translate to the roles he was pursuing.

  • 4. Pursuit & Effort

Nothing can make up for effort and James was ready and willing to put in the work. Expectations were set early and often that the game of hunting for a new role would be a grind. James understood and was willing, while simultaneously utilizing his network to help him get his foot in the door to secure an interview.

  • 5. Expanding Horizons:

When James and I initially spoke in 2022, he was solely focused on landing a job for a top brand within the golf industry. He wasn’t terribly concerned about the role, as long as he was able to work in that specific industry. As we flushed out more of his long term goals (desired income, investments, and purchasing a home) he decided to expand his search outside of the golf industry and to focus on sales overall because this would help him maximize his earning potential and utilize his prior experience, while pursuing his goals.

Key Client Takeaways and Lessons Learned

1. Support through time and structure:

  • “Keith gave me a structure that I can draw upon again and again when life gets difficult or hard.” - James Ingram
  • “The weekly check-ins and structure allowed me to implement everything we were working through. Even during the times when I felt like I was drifting or feeling unmotivated, it always felt like I had someone who was invested in my success, outside of me.” - James Ingram
  • “Having someone you can trust is invaluable, I’d pay anything for that. Working with Keith in a season of uncertainty and full of unknowns gave me just that.” - James Ingram

2. THERE IS MORE THAN ONE PATH TO SUCCESS:

  • “When I initially started working with Keith, I was solely focused on matching my career to what I loved (golf). Since I wasn’t sure where to start in my career change, I figured that if I worked in the golf industry, I’d be happy.” - James Ingram
  • “Keith heard me out and helped me expand my perspective on what I wanted to pursue and the opportunities in front of me, which eventually led me to explore new horizons in terms of the career paths and industry's that I was open to.” - James Ingram

3. More than a hype man:

  • “When I started my job search, I felt like I didn’t have the experience I needed, I didn’t feel worthy, and some of the early rejection started making me doubt myself and my decision to change careers.” - James Ingram
  • “Prior to working with Keith, I thought having a coach was the equivalent of having a personal hype man. Keith was quite the opposite. He was genuine, no fluff or unnecessary hype. He gave me the structure and confidence to believe in myself. Even when there was a setback, there was still enough structure in place to help me pivot and be successful.” - James Ingram

4. Delayed Gratification

  • “A few months into my first sales role, an opportunity in the golf industry came across my plate and I considered leaving my current role in order to pursue my dream of working in the golf industry.” - James Ingram
  • “Keith didn’t tell me not to pursue the role, but he did ask me why the opportunity was attractive, what I want, and where this opportunity fit in with the rest of my goals and priorities. This conversation helped me shift my mindset away from putting all my eggs in one basket. I moved away from being crushed if one particular thing didn’t happen and ultimately decided to pass on the opportunity, in favor of pursuing a career path that had more upside. A few months later, this decision led to me landing a role at Realtor, where I ultimately flourished and ended up achieving all the other goals that I set out to accomplish.” - James Ingram
